NDC Warns Against Fake Primary Results as Party Prepares for May 29 Nationwide Vote

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), a newly registered opposition party, has urged Nigerians to disregard circulating “fake” primary election results ahead of its nationwide primaries scheduled for May 29, 2026. In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party clarified that no official outcomes have been released and warned against disinformation that could undermine the credibility of its internal process.

The party said its primaries, covering presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly positions, remain ongoing, with final results to be announced exclusively by its National Working Committee after proper collation from across the country.

Enekweizu explained that minor adjustments were made to the timetable due to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays. According to him, May 28 was set aside for logistical preparations and documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while voting and collation activities are expected to culminate on May 29.

“Any result currently in circulation did not emanate from the party,” Enekweizu said, describing such claims as “fabricated and misleading.” He added that the party is committed to a transparent and credible primary process, stressing that premature or false announcements could create confusion among party members and the wider public.

The warning follows a wave of unverified claims on social media, including reports alleging that activist Aisha Yesufu had lost a senatorial primary and that former presidential candidate Peter Obi had secured tens of millions of votes in a presidential contest. The NDC dismissed these reports as baseless, noting that no official tally has been concluded or endorsed.

Political analysts say the spread of false election information has become a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, particularly in the build-up to major political cycles. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, emerging parties like the NDC are likely to face heightened scrutiny as they attempt to establish credibility and build public trust.

The NDC, registered earlier this year, positions itself as a reform-driven alternative in Nigeria’s evolving political space. Party officials say ensuring a credible primary process is critical to its long-term viability and public perception.

As preparations continue, the party has called on supporters, stakeholders, and the media to rely only on verified updates from its official communication channels. It also urged vigilance against the spread of misinformation, warning that such actions could undermine democratic processes.

With just hours to the primaries, attention now turns to how effectively the NDC can manage its first major internal election, and whether it can set a standard for transparency as Nigeria edges closer to another pivotal electoral cycle.
